Islanders Sign, Streit & Weight
The Islanders
signed two free agents earlier this week, bringing in power-play
specialist Mark Streit and veteran center and 4 time all-star Doug
Weight.
New York signed Streit late Tuesday night. The 30-year-old spent the
last 3 seasons with Montreal and had a breakout season in 2007-08,
totaling 13 goals and 49 assists for 62 points. 34 of those points came
on the powerplay. He split his time up front on the fourth line and on
defense, but he'll play on the back end with the Isles. The Swiss star
signed for 5 years at $4.1 million per year.
On Day 2, the Isles inked a veteran to lead and teach the young players.
Doug Weight brings 17 years of NHL experience as well as two Olympic
appearances to the Island. Weight, a close friend of captain Bill
Guerin, had a down year last season, splitting time between St. Louis
and Anaheim and totaling 25 points. He scored 16 goals and 43 assists in
2006-07 playing alongside Guerin.
The Islanders also grabbed a new third-string goalie on Wednesday in
Yann Danis. Once a highly regarded prospect with Montreal, Danis was
blocked in the Canadiens' organization by the likes of Huet, Price, and
Halak. He had a 3.28 GAA with a ..893 SV% playing for the Hamilton
Bulldogs of the AHL last year.
In other news, the Islanders signed AHL All-Stars C Mike Iggulden and D
Brett Skinner as depth for Bridgeport. The team also signed enforcer
Mitch Fritz, C Kurtis McLean, D Chris Lee, and undrafted G Peter Mannino. |
