Uniondale, NY, January 15, 2009 -- The New York Islanders in conjunction with LIPA, National Grid, Boro Recycling and Covanta Energy announced today their “Goal Green” initiative. “Goal Green” is an environmental and social commitment campaign to educate the people of Long Island how they can all contribute to a greener environment. The Islanders and their four partners will activate this initiative through a variety of programs. The first kick-off event will be held on Saturday January 17th when the Islanders take on the New Jersey Devils as part of the Lighthouse Hockey Jamboree Weekend as fans will be encouraged to bring in small electronic devices that can be recycled during our “Goal Green” Recycling Nights.
The Islanders will also be rolling out a new “Goal Green” website www.newyorkislanders.com/goalgreen for fans to take part in a social effort to create a greener Long Island. In addition, LIPA, National Grid, Boro Recycling and Covanta Energy have partnered together to create a series of public service announcements to run during Islander home games throughout the year.
“The PSA’s will encourage our fans to take part in our “Goal Green” initiative,” said Islanders’ President Chris Dey. “Our goal is to not only include our fans directly, but also monitor our entire “Goal Green” effort through a social commitment network. The Islanders will be launching a stand-alone website where fans can actually pledge personal Green commitments such as saving water or using less electricity each day. This will let us actually calculate the net effect we are having on our local environment through our fans, our partners and all of their respective employees. We applaud our presenting sponsors for blazing a new trail for this unprecedented social green initiative.”
Added LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law: “LIPA has set a lofty goal to become a leader among the nation’s public utilities in the areas of energy efficiency and clean energy. We are proud of our commitment, and with a partner like the NY Islanders, we have a unique opportunity to educate Long Islanders on how energy efficiency saves customers money while simultaneously helping the environment.”
“Goal Green” will also include additional key programs that will both drive home the message, and create value as well. Fans that bring small electronic recyclable items to Islanders games on January 17 and 19 will have the chance to win Islanders merchandise and tickets to future games. Fans who carpool with four or more people on our “Goal Green” nights (2/16, 2/28, 3/7, 3/28 and 4/11) will receive free parking.
"We are proud to be a supporter of the Goal Green initiative, helping to educate fans on the importance of making a commitment to a Greener environment,” said John Caroselli, Executive Vice President/Chief Strategy Officer, National Grid. “Our commitment to “The Power of Action” supports the belief that consumers can take small actions in order to make a large difference in the environment. We are encouraged by the steps the NY Islanders are taking to promote this behavior. At National Grid we remain committed to serving the Long Island community with reliable service and sound environmental practices.”
Added Rick Sander, Regional Business Director for Covanta Energy: "As environmental stewards, Covanta is a committed partner in “Goal Green” and the Islanders efforts to educate residents on how to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover energy from waste. Through this partnership, we can make significant inroads in teaching residents about their environmental footprint and help them reach their goals of going green."
“For someone like me, who has made his living in the recycling business for nearly 30 years, it’s especially gratifying to be a part of the Islanders “Goal Green” initiative,” said Joe Luzzi, President, Boro Recycling. “We at are extremely proud of our efforts to be environmentally responsible. During this past year we processed over one billion containers to be recycled.”
Islanders TV will host a “How do you Goal Green?” video contest throughout the year. Fans will create: 30 second videos that showcase how they are making a difference in the Long Island environment. The Grand Prize winner will receive a night in an eight-person luxury suite.
The Nassau Coliseum and Savor, the official concessionaire of the Islander’s have also made the commitment to Goal Green by using environmentally friendly paper and bio-degradable utensils throughout the Coliseum.
